We use a propane solvent extraction method to extract the remaining oil from the cake. The cake is broken into chips, then flattened or pelletized and treated with solvent, which dissolves the oil, leaving 1% or less of the oil trapped in the solids.
In the extraction process, air is removed and vapors are introduced using a patented process to reduce solvent losses. An odorless, liquefied propane is then passed through the solids under pressure until the desired extraction is completed. Afterward, the liquid is drained and final solvent removed.
The entire process takes place under 100 F° in order to retain most of the flavor and aroma in the defatted solids. The extracted oil is also desolventized under very mild conditions which preserve the oil quality.
