Saw Palmetto for BPH
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (a.k.a. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. While saw palmetto has been used to treat many different ailments, it is most commonly used to relieve BPH symptoms such as: too-frequent urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urination, or needing to urinate during the night.
Saw palmetto is widely used in Europe; for example, it is used in 50 percent of treatments for BPH in Italy and in 90 percent of such treatments in Germany. Some studies have shown that its efficacy rates rival Finasteride (Proscar), a drug often prescribed for relief of BPH symptoms, without some of the unpleasant side effects. Other studies suggest that saw palmetto could even shrink the size of an enlarged prostate.
Researchers speculate that saw palmetto may affect the body’s testosterone levels, and perhaps reduce the amount of an enzyme that promotes the growth of prostate cells.
